Concerns about indoor air quality (IAQ) in buildings first surfaced in the mid 1970’s. IAQ problems were then associated with misdirected efforts to reduce energy use in buildings. Now in the new millennium the real estate development industries are once again faced with a significant energy management challenge. This time the focus of attention is on energy conservation and efficiency to mitigate the disparity between growing demand and declining supply of conventional sources; and to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions to reverse the effects of Climate Change.

Path to Sustainability

Demand side management initiatives continue to play an important role in helping facility owners reduce energy and operational costs, as well as corresponding reductions in environmental emissions. Energy management priorities in terms of cost, while of primary importance, are being joined by the social pressures of environmental stewardship and sustainability practices. A subject matter expert from the energy services industry will be providing a session to expose facility managers and owners to “The Path to Sustainability” outlining plans and actions vital to establishing a strategic direction around sustainability.
